This is the final (July 2005) report 'Clearance and Exemption Principles, Processes and Practices for use by the Nuclear Industry'. This is a very comprehensive document for the UK nuclear industry weighing in at over 200 pages. This code details the principles, processes, and practices that should be used when determining whether an article or material may be released from any further regulatory control (based on radiological protection considerations). The report presents a summary of regulatory background, details interactions with other legislation, outlines industry practices, describes management principles, presents clearance and sentencing processes, details statistics and discusses measurement.

This document provides exemption guidance for radioactivity in museums. This will cover geological specimens (U / Th), radium dials etc. Care: Ionactive looks after several large museums which are not covered under this exemption. In addition, it is important to note that geological specimens are out-of-scope under this exemption, but still have a potentially significant radiological hazard when stored in bulk quantities (we have measured 100-900 micro Sv/h from cupboards storing geological specimens). [Also applies in Wales and Scotland]
